Typical XLR connector

XLR is the kind of connector used by most microphones and higher end professional audio gear. It delivers a balanced mono signal and sometimes also phantom power.

It is typically much more sturdy than phono and minijack connectors, making it ideal for stage use and other situations where lots of plugging and unplugging takes place, and rough situations in general.
